Boccia - the Game
Boccia is a precision ball sport related to bowls and petanque. It was originally designed to be played by people with cerebral palsy, but now includes athletes with other severe disabilities affecting motor skills. In 1984 it became a Paralympic sport and in 2008 was being played by over 50 countries worldwide. Bermuda has been playing recreational boccia as a sport for people with disabilities for approximately 6 years.
Boccia - the Benefits
For many of our players, the sport of boccia has given their lives a focus and fulfillment by bringing together people with similar abilities to participate in fun and competitive activities. Boccia Bermuda has provided an opportunity for players who wish to take this sport beyond the recreation level and will allow them to pursue their dreams to represent Bermuda in a way they never thought possible. The Boccia Bermuda Team provide inspiration to others who have a physical or intellectual disability, by showing them that having a disability is not a limitation, but can offer opportunities to explore the world and explore their own potential.
